A fire broke out on Friday morning at the Punjab National Bank branch located on Sevak Road in Siliguri. Smoke was seen coming out of the branch’s main shutter, following which local residents alerted both the police and bank staff. Three fire engines reached the site and brought the flames under control after significant effort.
According to information received, a technical fault in the bank's internal wiring system had been noticed on Thursday. Preliminary assessment suggests that this fault led to the short circuit that caused the fire. While no damage occurred to any customer service counters, some electronic devices inside the premises were damaged in the incident. There were no injuries reported.
Pritam Ghosh, Chief Manager of PNB’s Siliguri Zone, confirmed that the fire was due to a short circuit. “There has been no loss to the bank. Customers’ deposits are completely safe,” he said. An internal inquiry has been initiated to review the cause of the incident and assess preventive measures.
